Don’t Finish Last (Unless You’re Asked?)?

There have been a few races I’ve run where I’m not in the mood to run.  However, I figure I shelled out the money for a shirt, food, whatever permits were paid for and so I figure I should show up and run.  Then I usually get in the mentality of as long as I don’t finish last, I’m good.  One of my tweeps on twitter presented an article yesterday about some races who have designated last runners.  Not just runners who finish last, but who VOLUNTEER to finish last.  Apparently there are races where people volunteer to be the last runner so runners don’t have the fear that they’ll be the last ones over the finish line.

According to the Anniston Star article, the Designated Last Finisher (DLF) are there to encourage people and to keep people at the end in front of them.  There’s words of encouragement thrown out and talking with spectators and volunteers on course.  Apparently, if you’re a little kid watching, you might even get a free balloon from these DLFs!!

So, if you’re ever worried about finishing last, maybe, just maybe there’s someone in the back of the race making sure you don’t have to have your freak out session!
