What’s your longest (running) streak?

Cal Ripken played in 2,131 consecutive games.  The UConn Women’s Basketball Team won 90 straight basketball games over the course of 2.5 years.  Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France 7 straight times.  The Chicago Cubs have gone 103 years without winning a World Series.

Joe Simpson, a retired dentist from Tennessee, has run every day for the last 40 years.  Seriously, every day since August 30th, 1971.  Only 6 people can claim and prove (through the US Running Streak Association) that they’ve run every day for 40 or more years.  The person with the longest streak? Mark Covert, who’s run every day since July 23, 1968.  My last rest day was sometime last week!  In a Wall Street Journal article by Scott Cacciola, we hear of issues that threatened both of these guys’ streaks- torn menisci, rattlesnake bites, minor knee surgeries that had them hobbling through runs the next day, running with blood clots and running the day after having plates put in both wrists.  There’s also the guy who runs even though he contracted polio as a kid and walks with a limp.

So whenever you complain about not having a rest day, think about the 60 and 70 year olds that haven’t had a break in 40 years despite who knows what medical issues.  What’s your longest streak?
