Be The Match

Yes I’m still around!!  With the ridiculous heat we’ve been having, I’ve been running  inside and haven’t been racing as much because I’ve been out of town without a car.  But yesterday, I received some news that made me take a step back and realize how grateful I am to be healthy.

In October, 2007, I was a senior at Loyola University Chicago.  One of the medical organizations I was a member of put on a bone marrow drive in order to try and find a bone marrow match for someone we had come in contact with.  It was a simple cheek swap and took maybe 5 minutes, start to finish and including paperwork, to do.  Since then, I’ve gotten newsletters and updates from Be the Match (formally called the National Bone Marrow Donation Program) about happenings and updates.  Yesterday, I got a very different email.  I found out that I was a potential match for someone needing either a stem cell or bone marrow transplant and Be the Match was wondering if I was still interested.  After some emails and phone calls, I’ve gone through the “Yes, I’m still interested” and “What do I have to do” and the donor health history form and at this point, am waiting to hear if additional blood work, etc on my end needs to be done to see how close of a match I am.  I pray that, for the person on the other end, I’m a close enough match and that I can help this person out (because let’s face it, if I were on the other end, I’d hope someone would do it for me).

If you’re not on the registry and want to be added or want to learn more, head to their website to learn more.
