Irene Came and Went

This weekend, Hurricane Irene decided to come and give Philadelphia a few (or 5.73″) inches of rain and a good deal of flooding on the Schuylkill River.  The river runs 1/2 mile from my apartment (and down a hill).  This afternoon, I took a walk down the hill because of rumors that it had flooded over on to Kelly Drive and West River Drive.  The trail around the River is used for the Rock n Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon coming up next month and the Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathon in November.  My place is fine, no damage or power loss, but this is what I found on my adventure to the river!

Hopefully all my East Coasters made it through in one piece and if there was damage done, it will be fixed quickly!  I can know say Philadelphia’s experienced Hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes all in the same week.  Let’s just hope we don’t get the fires too.

Taking Care of Business. And Your Legs

Ever since I’ve been in Philadelphia, I’ve been looking for a place to get a good massage.  There comes a time in every runner’s life where a massage to help recoup the body during training is needed.  The massage therapist I go to in Ohio spoils me rotten and thus, I compare everyone to her.  I tried a place on South Street in February and it didn’t go over so well.  I realize it was a school, but at the same time, it physically hurt and nothing felt better after the fact.  So last week, I found a discount on Philly Dealyo for The Bamboo Spa in Springfield, PA off Baltimore Pike.  it was a half off coupon for an hour massage.  Granted, it’s a little bit of a drive and City Ave isn’t the most fun to drive down, I purchased a deal and went in on Thursday around noon.

Boy, was it a good gamble.  My legs have really been tired and sore since the long runs have been picking up.  My massage therapist hit some painful spots I didn’t know I had but was able to do some good work on my legs and back which really needed some work.  A full hour of getting the kinks worked out.  As much as I love getting worked on, the oils always do a number on my sense of smell.  I’m surprised I don’t break out with the amount of oil that’s used!  I usually end up with a second shower just to get the excess oil off!

The fact I found a place that does a good massage in Philly is a plus.  I scheduled a second one for September 18th, after I run in Rock n Roll Philadelphia for the third straight year.  Finally, something good to look forward too
